Background and Focus
Dr. Fairholm practiced Neurosurgery consecutively between 1973 and 2001 – latterly at Vancouver General Hospital for 19 years with an interest in spinal cord surgery. He has a long time career interest in international education which led him to Taiwan, where he spent six years assisting in the development of a neurosurgical department, neurosurgical training program, and surgical education, programs which all continue today.
Following his return to The University of British Columbia, Dr. Fairholm was Program Director for the Neurosurgical program and Postgraduate Program Director for the surgical department.
In 1993 he began his role as Assistant Dean for Faculty Development and participated in the strategic planning process for the undergraduate curriculum reform. In 2001 Dr. Fairholm focused his career emphasis on medical education, completed a diploma in medical education by extension from the University of Dundee in Scotland.
He maintains an active interest undergraduate education, the residency program and international undergraduate and neurosurgical education.
He is Board member and Past Secretary of the Foundation for International Education in Neurological Surgery. His present sphere of international interest is at Padjadjaran University in Indonesia.
