Interested residents are able to pursue certification as Clinician Investigators by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.
A prerequisite is that the candidate is registered in the Clinician Investigator Program (CIP), Department of Surgery, University of British Columbia. The CIP stipulates a minimum of two years full time training in research. Other conditions are congruent with the Master’s Program in Surgery or other Graduate programs in Biomedical Sciences available at the University of British Columbia.
To acquire certification by the College, candidates are free to chose between a graduate degree in Surgery (MSc), a graduate degree in a non-surgical discipline (MSc or PhD in various areas ranging from Molecular Biology and Neuroscience to Epidemiology and Health Economics), or research training without registration in a graduate program in an approved laboratory.
The Department of Surgery encourages registration in the CIP for candidates prepared to spend the required minimum of two years in research training.
